If you get it, share it
May I just say, that as a basic practice of efficient event management, if you plan and announce an event at one location and it changes, you NEED TO NOTIFY those involved of the change.
You can't rely on everyone who was planning on attending to just hopefully check the site, and hopefully notice "in the fine print" that the venue had changed.
Personally, I had invited three co-workers, a radio show host, and a friend seeking a new career to the mixer last night. Imagine how disappointed we all were to show up promptly at 5:30 at Des Moines Social Club and discover the event was not there.
Would it have been too much trouble to send out a follow-up e-mail announcing the change? I'd be happy to step up and be in charge of communication like this if someone else is too busy to make sure important information is relayed to the relevant contacts.
Please make sure this does not happen again, as it really looks bad for the Club.
Thank you.

Please let me know so I can pass along your comments to the appropriate person.
Thank you!

Permalink Reply by John Burnley on January 31, 2011 at 2:15pm Thanks for the post Sarah. As Katie mentioned, I don't think it was an SMCDSM sponsored event. We allow individuals and groups to post their Social Media events to our calendar as a courtesy, but they are responsible for keeping the information current.
If it was an SMCDSM sponsored event, we would have communicated the changes not only through this site but the other Social Media channels as well. I am also interested in which event you are discussing, please let one of the board members know.
Regards,
John

Thank you for brining this to our attention, obviously our apologies after the fact cannot change what has happened, but now that you have brought this to the attention of the Board we can discuss how we monitor posts to our page. We want to remain flexible to the community, but we do have some responsibility for our own page and hopefully we can come up with a solution to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.

As you've gathered this was an event of the Social Media Club (I believe Laura Gaulke posted), which is entirely separate from our club. They're a physical brick & mortar location with events that span a wide variety of arts, music and education. Now totally unrelated, we're the club that holds free events surrounding social media topics and related networking opportunities. We offer a free public service to others in town who wish to publicize their related events on our site and sometimes in an email to members. Many of these events are "ours" or officially club sponsored, this one was not.
Please join as an upcoming event -- and should any of the details change, you bet we'll let you know.
