Curious...
I am curious why there are so many people without profiles pictures on SMCDSM. Isn't Social Media about transparency and connections? Doesn't the fact that someone failed to put their picture on their site imply they are not taking this seriously?

I've wondered the same thing, Pete. It's not even that difficult of a task to complete. Ning makes it pretty easy.
I would love to see more smiling faces on the site instead of the default avatar photo.

Maybe they are trying this site out before becoming comfortable enough to post their pictures.
If I was brand new here, I would be hesitant to post a picture up until I become comfortable with interacting with everyone.
Either that or they're afraid their bosses will whack them.

I agree with Pete. Perhaps make it mandatory in the settings, Mike. Faceless people are inherently anti-social and almost create suspicion. Witness protection program? We can't force the existing faceless to upload a pic, but can going forward. Maybe a nice PSA -- "Dozens suffer from this affliction and may not even realize why they have so few friends. Please help a faceless friend today... take their picture and show them how to add it, and you'll open doors from them to be friends with others."

Hi Pete: We discussed this at our last board meeting. We will be doing some outreach to members on this subject and possibly changing the default avatar to something a little more embarrassing to cajole people into action! Good call though. One thought is that some people simply don't know how to format their photos to upload to sites like Ning and Twitter where the sizes are much smaller than your average photo. I think we may have stumbled upon a subject for an entire meeting!

I'm with Romelle on this one. I wouldn't be so quick as to assume it's people's lack of 'seriousness' towards this group. I would have to say it's quite possibly because some people are more private than others when it comes to his/her online presence. As Romelle said, it could be a concern with his/her employer or maybe even the fact that since this is a fairly open club and people don't want to see it become something like Match.com.
I say thumbs down to requiring people to upload a picture or even making the default avatar something that prompts people to change it - this will only lead to people posting something else that's not necessarily a picture of themself. In my opinion, the board should strive to create more events and online content that brings the members closer together, encourages more 2-way conversation and gets people face-to-face in order to generate an authentic sense of community (that's the point right?).
Right now, the club/this network has a lot of potential but it has become somewhat stagnant. Last week's #CIB I had a discussion with a handful of individuals who shared these same thoughts and are disappointed at the lack of social interaction on a SM network. The profile picture thing touches a much deeper issue that I think the board should continue to address, but from a more global perspective.
That being said, I'm not a hater - I love the network and am wiling to help do my part to make things better.

I'm with Chris on this issue.
I just did a quick scan through the Members area (17 pages! - Wonderful) and I didn't see anyone who is a "regular" in the DSM social media scene (active on Twitter/FB/CIB) without a picture. That might mean that many of the picture-less folks are new to Social Media and probably don't have a suitable picture for all of their profiles. It's easy to forget that most folks don't have Photoshop or similar programs to crop and size pictures (or maybe they have no photo skills) so it's tough for them to get an avatar together. I would maybe offer a carrot (free avatar help) before I would offer a stick (silly default pic). My $0.02.
