Social Media Club Des Moines

If you get it, share it

I know things are just getting started, but will we (let's) consider the events tab above be for ALL Social Media/SocNet events around. I'd love to subscribe to one feed for all offline/online events than multiple. Too early for that kinda discussion?

The more I think about it, the more I like this idea. As a resource for social media in Des Moines, it would stand to make sense that someone should be able to come to this site and find out about all the social media events in the area.

Currently events must be approved before appearing, but that is probably wise for the time being to make sure that the system doesn't get abused. We can probably task someone with drafting up some guidelines as to what types of events are accepted and what are not.

Also, Ning events provide RSVP functionality, guest inviting (via email or the SMCDSM network), event commenting, etc., which makes the system fairly robust. I can see the RSS feed being very beneficial as well.

Great thought on this, Mike!
Sounds like Mike Sansone may have a new volunteer job...

I like the idea of aggregating event info under the SMCDSM event tab - it might get a little sketchy if the event RSVP info is also being managed via Eventbrite or FB, but I assume we can disable that functionality for our events per instance?
Yes, the RSVP functionality can be disabled on a per-event basis. If the RSVP is managed elsewhere, then you would just need to include a link to the RSVP page.

A centralized calendar for these types of events could also boost overall awareness and attendance, so I really don't see any drawbacks. I believe that events can be categorized as well, so as long as official SMCDSM meetings are easy to find, I certainly don't have any problem with it.
Funny idea, Ben:-)

Wouldn't it be great if we, the community of SMCDSM can come up with the tagging system that automatically curates this kind of thing. There's gotta be a way to tap into the power of RSS and the use of tagsonomy -- or are both still in early stages of use and understanding?

I'd be happy to act as curator (or assistant curator) if need be, but I will hope to get replaced by automation:-)
From the most basic research I've done on this, there just isn't much available in ways of automating event creation. However, I would stand by the idea that these events ought to be manually curated, otherwise we run the risk of becoming to broadly focused and end up with a list of events that aren't relevant.

For now I'd say that if you have a social media-related event, go ahead and add it to the calendar. Right now I am the only one approving new events, but with an understanding of what should be listed and what should not, someone could easily take on this task as part of their involvement with SMCDSM.
I just added the first event to the calendar. Everything is easy enough to set up. Let's start populating as we find or know of events to be included.
The calendar is empty right now, people. Let's make sure we are continuing to capture area events related to social media! :)
