Social Media Club Des Moines

If you get it, share it

Hi everyone,

I'm afraid I've become stumped and am looking for some help. The issue has to do with some of the connectivity I have going between three social media outlets - Twitter / Facebook and my company's blog.

I currently have Twitter set up to post whenever a new blog post is published (along with unique Twitter usage, retweets, etc). As I'm now developing a Facebook page, I would naturally like to have both of these sites feed into the wall of the page.

Here's the twist - in Facebook, I would like to have the blog posts published on the wall with a short excerpt and link leading back to the blog, something I can do by individuallly linking my blog to Facebook via Twitterfeed. I don't do this with the blog's link to Twitter because of the 140 character limit (posts show up as headline + link).

Since my blog and Twitter are already linked, I can't simply link my Twitter to Facebook because the blog-to-Facebook link already shows my posts and I don't want to have redundant status updates on Facebook.  Also, the fact that I would like to have a short excerpt displayed within the Facebook update is the reason I dont just link up Twitter and have it post blog posts at the same time.

Does anyone know of a way I can get around this issue? If not, I can live with having just linked headlines posted on Facebook, it's just not ideal. It would be nice if there existed some sort of RSS/social media linkage command center - where a user could select exactly what kind of messages/posts go in and out of various mediums you are using.

Since I've not heard of any such tool, would anyone like to go into business and develop one? haha!

I've successfully used RSS Graffiti for aggregating blog content to a FB page. It has some pretty robust customization settings, but you will need to figure out how you want to treat your blog -> Twitter -> FaceBook feed. With that you may have some redundancy.

RSS Graffiti is a really good tool to accomplish what you want for posting to Facebook from your blogs RSS.

I personally don't like all my post on Twitter to automatically go to Facebook and vice-versa. But RSS Graffiti can also be configured to allow a Twitter feed to post to Facebook when you include #fb in your Tweet.

Or, You could use a tool like HooteSuite and publish to both.
Thanks!

Like I said - it's not a huge deal if I can't get post headline + excerpt in Facebook. I'm planning on doing some experimenting with RSS Graffiti and FriendFeed to see if I can get some desireable results.

As I explained to a friend earlier this week, a lot of RSS technique still feels a bit like alchemy to me - I hope in the near future it can be further refined, perhaps even having a tool that allows users to graphically map out the routing of their content (i.e. Facebook 'Open Graph' graphics).
I ended up getting it all figured out. In the end I kind of ended up doing a facepalm over how simple it was.

To make blog posts in Twitter stand out, I adjusted how my blog feeds into Twitter by giving it a "Blog:" prefix tag. Then in Yahoo! Pipes I ran a simple pipe using the Twitter RSS feed and filtered out any posts containing the "Blog:" prefix.

Because Twitter generates the user handle as a prefix for tweets in an RSS feed, I ran a second keyword filter that plucked out the twitter handle.

Now my Facebook receives posts as such:
1. Blog posts direct from the blog via Twitterfeed (with linked title and copy excerpt)
2. Filtered tweets from Twitter via yahoo pipes and posted via Twitterfeed (with a new prefix that says 'via Twitter' to stand out in the Facebook wall)

Thanks for all the help everyone!
