Social Media Club Des Moines

If you get it, share it

Alright. I'm throwing this idea out there to see if it will stick. I'd appreciate any feedback you have about this, positive or negative.

What if we posted all or some of our blog posts on this site?

Many of us work very hard to create content that many people never discover. I too am guilty of failing to go out and explore the online world happening around me as much as I should. Sure I have my five to ten blogs I visit regularly, but that's just dwelling on the surface of what's happening in the Des Moines social media scene.

Since this organization and this site is a hub for social media activity in Des Moines, why not use it to further the efforts of our members, the Des Moines social media scene and the SMCDSM?

Basic format on this could be something like the following:
1. Post syndicated posts in the blog post area of this site. (Check the center column on the home page)
3. Title would be: Your Blog Name / Blog Entry Title i.e. The Brand Chef - Marketers, You Need to Spend
4. Blog Post Content - copy cut and pasted version of original post with links, photos, embedded video, etc.
5. Post and tweet away!

Again, this is just an idea and any modifications, changes or feedback positive or negative are welcomed.

Site aggregation would be GREAT!... better exposure. More backlinks! I say YES!

Works for me. I'll try to post something here soon.
Great idea!!!
WORD GOOSE.

Do It.
Thanks, guys. Seems like a non-issue, so I'll start syndicating AdMavericks here. I encourage you all to do the same so I don't look like a nimrod! Also, I will send an email out to the membership letting them know this feature is available to them. Thanks!
Great idea, Fleming. However, there are some SEO issues with duplicate content that one should be cognizant of before proceeding:

1. Wait for the search engines. Delay cutting and pasting your blog post until the search engines have crawled your blog and indexed it first. This because SEs attribute credit to the first site on which they find unique content. Every additional site on which the content is found is treated as - for lack of a better word - a poacher. Thus, if you publish your post and immediately paste it here on DSMSMC, you run the risk of SEs crediting this site over your own. Good for DSMSMC, bad for you.

2. Know when it's been indexed. To circumvent this issue, wait a day or two and then search a unique segment of your post that couldn't possibly be found on any other webpage. For instance, from this post you could search "I too am guilty of failing to go out and explore the online world happening around me as much as I should." Once your blog post appears in the search results (it should be the only one), feel free to move it over to the DSMSMC website.

3. Duplicate content is not a guest blog post. So offer previews of the main feature. You compose guest blog posts to gain some publicity and drive traffic to your site. These are original posts that don't appear on your own blog, but you gladly offer up your work in order to attract new readers.

While you also share duplicate content to expand your readership, you don't want readers thinking they can always get your latest content somewhere other than your own blog. Therefore, perhaps a better idea would be to publish the first few paragraphs of your post here on DSMSMC and inform readers that the remainder of your post can be found on your blog. (Great time, as the Chef said, to add a back link.)

To end this rant, I'll say that I truly think this is a fine idea, for, if executed properly, it will benefit individual bloggers and, more importantly, further cultivate this community.
To make things even easier... is there a way in NING to set up a RSS feed to pull in recent 5, 10, whatever# post summaries from the members? That way we avoid the cut/paste HTML styles issues (if any)?

Just a thought.

Great idea.
But duplication can be a problem.
Andrew,

Not sure how others feel, but I'd prefer to stick with cut & paste -- I'd rather have the control to determine which of my blog posts would belong here, some may not be as relevant. Also, we don't want to be locked into Ning's functionality. Per last night's board meeting, perhaps another site option coming along...
