Tom Brazelton - Communications Director

I am a web and graphic design professional with over 10 years experience working for large corporations in the Des Moines area. I've lent my knowledge and experience to Meredith CorporationAllied InsurancePrincipal Financial Group and many more.

Recently, I got out of the corporate world and am now work for the City of Ankeny as a Web Communications Specialist in their Public Relations department. Part of my duties includes developing and deploying the City's social media strategy. I now speak on behalf of the City through Twitter and Facebook and am looking forward to building a consistent, conversational tone to our communication with our citizens.

In my free time, I produce a web comic about movies called Theater Hopper that appeared in Juice Magazine in 2008, but has been online since 2002. It has been the perfect platform for me to experiment with social media as a promotional tool and a gateway to marketing experience in a consequence-free environment.

I love social media and am looking forward to learning more from members of the Social Media Club. Feel free to contact me on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn

Ben Cox - Membership Director

I Graduated from Simpson College w/ a BA in Marketing with an emphasis in Sports Administration. I lettered in Track and Field, competing in Sprints and the decathlon. I have a wife and 2 year old son with another son due at the end of March.

After college I sold shoes, then worked for a rental car company before I worked as a personal banker/loan officer at Wells Fargo Bank. I worked there for 3 years then left to be a loan officer at Keystone Bank. While at Keystone bank I was in charge of Marketing and w/ a marketing budget of $6,000 for the entire year had to get creative. I had been using Twitter for fun for a while at that point and started to see how I could use it for business as well. in late 2010 I left the bank to work for Info2Go which use to have TV Screens on top of Gas Pumps. I was in charge of Marketing/social media and worked in sort of a project manager capacity. While at Info2Go I lead the startup TownPoints which was a social media based rewards/group buying site. After a change in ownership I found myself unemployed and used social media to find a great new job. I work in project management at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. My team deals with online banking and other programs that access Wells Fargo mortgage data.

Derek Balsley - Secretary

I'm Derek Balsley, a marketing and social media professional in the Des Moines area.  I currently serve as a board member for the Social Media Club of Des Moines and as the Marketing Communication Specialist for Kreg Tool Company.  At Kreg, I play an lead role in the branding and creative phases for a wide variety of marketing efforts including Social Media, brand development, magazine print ads, web banner and search based advertising, product packaging, P.O.P., retail, direct print campaigns, in-package advertising and of course our popular TV Infomercial.

I started social media efforts from scratch at Kreg in late 2009.  Kreg is a woodworking tool manufacturer so I have the exciting challenge of bringing the world of social media to an industry and a generation of handymen not necessarily accustomed to this type technology.  Despite these challenges, by combining the strengths of both social and traditional marketing platforms, we've had tremendous success in that short period of time.   Our monthly newsletter is currently being received by over 100,000 Kreg Fans around the globe, our Ning Community for Kreg tool owners has recently blown past the 30,000 member mark, our younger Facebook Page has a small-but-active audience of around 6,500, and our YouTube Channel recently topped 2.25 million video views!

On a personal level, I'm a bit of a Jack of all trades... I'm passionate about branding, integrated marketing, agriculture, and social media; I enjoy power sports (look for me riding my new Victory Motorcycle around town), smoking an occasional cigar, working with my hands, spending weekends on my family farm, etc.  I also love photography, video editing, Apple products, and a nice stiff Rum and Coke.  Most importantly of course, I have a beautiful wife, Jessica, who teaches Art Education in Ankeny and blogs over at www.theartofed.com.
