- I think that part comes down to four things:

2) Resources for learning: where did/would you "pros" go to learn what you know--especially the ways you go about developing the strategies and tactics you use.
3) Opportunities to do pro bono work. I'm great at communication, new to social media. I'm willing to do the equivalent of washing the dishes for free if I can learn meaningful things or meet great people.
4) Leads on possible opportunities.
The rest, really, is up to me in terms of identifying my specialty, learning what there is to learn, and putting myself out there.

I had some good success with interviewing in the August-October range but it's since dried up. Doing some brainstorming on going into business for myself and talking to my first recruiter/headhunter to see if one of those routes makes sense. I should be back down to Des Moines sometime yet this month; haven't set the dates quite yet.
