Welcome to the Social Media Club - Des Moines
I'm happy to share new information about the Social Media Club - Des Moines. We had our first board meeting on Monday, March 22. All board members were in attendance as we generated ideas, focused on direction of the club and outlined ways for members to support the club's efforts.
Let's back up just a bit. The kick-off event at Raccoon River was a huge success. I think I speak for the entire board when I say we were overwhelmed and geeked out about the huge turnout. So what is the Social Media Club - Des Moines?
Social Media Club Des Moines is a local chapter of Social Media Club, an organization whose mission is to promote media literacy, promote standard technologies, encourage ethical behavior, and share best practices in social media.
The Des Moines chapter of Social Media Club seeks to bring together area technologists, business owners, educators, professionals, enthusiasts, and users of all vocations to provide a forum for education and collaboration on social media technology, platforms, and strategies.
What will this club be doing?
Rest assured, the rumors that this group will be a glorified tweet up are false. While networking will naturally play a role in our organization, we will spend a lot of time focusing on educating our members.
There will be speaking events from local speakers and hopefully, out of town folks as well. We want to be able to offer these events at no cost to our members which means we'll need help from our members.
What I am most excited about are the opportunities that we will create for our members to have some actual hands on experience. More details will come about not only learning more about social media but being able to develop strategies and implement campaigns for non-profit companies. I'll post more information about this in my next post.
What about other group like Iowa AMA, Central Iowa Bloggers, PRSA, Des Moines Ad Pros and Social Media Breakfasts?
What's good for the social media community is good for us. We want to work with these organizations - not against them. If you are a member of any of these organizations please feel free to post "social media" related events in the events section.
What's next?
In the next couple of days each board member will be posting an overview of their position's responsibilities and what kind of support they will need from the club overall. Look for that and get involved!

This is going to be cool. And nice video Josh -- though production value leaves a bit to be desired, the content was there - way to pump the UGC. I covet thy flip camera.
